Susan Stein
Teacher of Second Grade at Canaan Elementary School.
Member of the Class of 1965

Patchogue-Medford has been home to Susan Stein from the beginning. She attended Tremont Elementary School and was a member of its first graduating class. In 1965, she graduated from Patchogue High School, which was housed at the current Saxton Middle School Building at that time. She student taught at Canaan and Eagle Elementary schools and began subbing in a third grade classroom at Eagle Elementary. In 1969, Susan Stein became a teacher at Canaan Elementary School, teaching first grade for six years and then, at Principal Ace Watkin’s request, teaching second grade, where she has remained for all of her career.

When asked about the highlights of her career, she replied, without hesitation, that she received the greatest satisfaction from “doing good things.” Sue remembers a particular little girl whose mother has dies while she was in kindergarten and who was living with a guardian who was failing to provide for her basic needs. Sue investigated, initiated contact with CPS and relentlessly pursued the case. She assisted the grandparent in gaining custody and made certain that the little girl was in a loving home. As she explains, When happy, kids can learn anything. For Susan, insuring happiness goes beyond the school day and school grounds.

During the summer, Susan calls each parent and provides her home phone number, assuring him or her that they can call her for anything, big or small. Technology has enabled her to reach out further. At Tooter4Kids.com there is a wealth of information. Self-taught, Susan Stein has devoted thousands of hours to exploring and integrating technology in the classroom. In Mrs. Stein’s second grade, it is safe for students to go on the web, to enjoy and to learn and to grow. Her teacher site has received over 17,000 hits since May 3,2001 and continues to grow. People from all over the world sign her guest book and a professor from Rowan University requires his graduate and undergraduate students to bookmark and use this great site.

Susan does not particularly look forward to retirement next year, but she is planning to write poetry and to continue to explore the growing field of computer technology. Plans include trying to publish the book she wrote about her Lhalso Spso called "My Little Man." Sue and her husband Alvin, who retired from Patchogue-Medford Schools as Director of Security, look forward to time shared with one another and with their ShihTzu Harley. Sons Michael and Scott, both busy with careers and college, are an important part of her life.

Susan Stein became a teacher because she wanted to be a psychologist and a social worker. Her Father passed away during her senior year of high school and she has decided not to go to college as she wanted to help her family. Her mother intervened and made her go to college. Her mother's advice was that if she became a teacher, she could be all those things and a mother too. Susan has certainly been very successful in all those areas!
